How to Order Food in Chinese: 14 Phrases That Actually Work

When I first moved to China, I ate the same two dishes for a month. Not because the food was amazing — because I was too nervous to ask for options. The three-sentence method
You do not need fifty phrases. You need a pattern and the confidence to reuse it:
- Point + 这个. Staff rarely mind. It is how half the locals order at busy counters too.
- Staple + verb. Once you know one dish’s name, say 要 + dish: 要牛肉面 yào niú ròu miàn (“I’ll take the beef noodles”).
- One heat-fix sentence. 不要太辣 covers nine out of ten emergencies south of the Yangtze.
One tone note: in 买单, mǎi is a half-third in real speech — it stays low and drops the rise before dān. Saying it that way sounds instantly less textbook.
