Flying in China: Airport Phrases, 值机, and What to Say

10-Second Answer: Chinese airports run on a short script: check in at 值机, find your 登机口, and listen for 请登机. Learn the 14 words in the table below and you can fly through any city in the country.

Airport Mandarin Is a Script, Not a Conversation

Airport staff repeat the same sentences all day, and so can you. In 2026 I flew the Shanghai–Guangzhou route twice a month for work, and after the first trip I stopped looking at the English signs. The boarding calls follow one skeleton: 前往 + city + 的旅客请注意. The check-in counters answer the same three questions. Learn the script once, and every gate in the country starts to sound familiar.

The 14 Airport Words You Will Actually Hear

The Check-in Dialogue

Walk up to any 值机柜台 zhí jī guì tái counter, passport out, and start with this. The pinyin below shows how the tones actually slide together — nǐ hǎo becomes ní hǎo when the next syllable is also third tone.

You: 你好,我想办理值机。
ní hǎo, wó xiǎng bàn lǐ zhí jī. (Hello, I’d like to check in.)

Agent: 可以,请出示护照。
ké yǐ, qǐng chū shì hù zhào. (Sure, passport please.)

You: 我要靠窗的座位。
wǒ yào kào chuāng de zuò wèi. (I’d like a window seat.)

Agent: 好的。有托运行李吗?
hǎo de. yǒu tuō yùn xíngli ma? (OK. Any checked bags?)

You: 有一件。
yǒu yí jiàn. (One.)

Notice 一件 yí jiàn: 一 flips to second tone before a fourth-tone syllable. It’s the same character that becomes yì before first, second, and third tones — the full pattern is in the 一 and 不 tone changes guide, and the 你好/我想 shape comes from tone sandhi.

Boarding Calls: One Skeleton, Every City

Every 登机广播 boarding announcement in China is built from the same frame. Once you know it, you can relax:

前往成都的旅客请注意,现在开始登机。
qián wǎng Chéng dū de lǚ kè qǐng zhù yì, xiàn zài kāi shǐ dēng jī.
Passengers travelling to Chengdu, boarding starts now.

请前往 15 号登机口登机。
qǐng qián wǎng shí wǔ hào dēng jī kǒu dēng jī.
Please board at gate 15.

City names are the only variable. Learn 前往 + city + 的旅客请注意 and you will hear your own boarding call instead of a wall of noise.

Baggage Rules Worth Knowing (2026)

  • Domestic economy tickets usually include 20 kg of 托运行李 checked baggage. Budget lines like 春秋航空 Chūn qiū Háng kōng sell cheaper fares with a 15 kg limit — check the ticket before you pack the big suitcase.
  • Overweight bags cost roughly 1.5% of the full economy fare per extra kilo, a 民航局 rule that still holds in 2026. The one time I went over, the counter printed the amount on a screen before I paid — no intimidating mental math.
  • 充电宝 chōng diàn bǎo power banks fly in carry-on only, and the capacity is printed on the side. Over 100 Wh needs airline approval; nobody checks unless it looks like a brick.
  • The 100 ml liquids rule works exactly as at home: big liquids go in 托运 tuō yùn or not at all, small ones ride through 安检 ān jiǎn.

The Phrasebook Advice I’d Ignore

Phrasebooks teach 请给我靠窗的座位, a perfect sentence you’ll rarely need. In practice, 我要靠窗 (wǒ yào kào chuāng) gets faster service, because agents treat 我要 as a preference, not a demand. It’s the same pattern as ordering food or ordering coffee: state what you want, skip the polite wrapper.

And if your trip is under four hours door-to-door, the 高铁 high-speed rail usually beats flying once you count airport time. I still fly when the route is over 1,000 km — and cash barely matters anymore, since 2026 airports run on phone payments.

Your First 5 Minutes

  1. Read the 14-word table once out loud, slowly.
  2. Listen to the boarding-call skeleton twice: 前往 [city] 的旅客请注意, 现在开始登机.
  3. Replay the check-in dialogue until 我要靠窗的座位 comes out without thinking.
  4. When you land, open the metro and bus guide — the Airport Express lines are covered there.
